401k Performance Analyzed (Part I - Overall View)
Personal Finance
I decided to take some time to analyze my 401k performance over the last year. I’ve discussed my allocations before in my T. Rowe Price account, but just to recap:
- Equity Index Trust (PREIX) - 60%
- Amer Funds Europacific Growth (AEPGX) - 25%
- Equity Income Fund (PRFDX) - 10%
- Mid-Cap Growth Fund (RPMGX) - 5%
Overall Performance
Below is the chart showing the basic numbers for my 401k from Feb 1 2007 to Feb 1 2008.

Considering the recent downturn in the market is looks pretty good. The value of my 401k increased from $37,775.54 to $52,605.87 for an overall gain of 39.26%.
Performance Without Contributions
The problem with the numbers above is that this does not take into account that I made over $16,000 worth of contributions to my account during this time frame. The chart below adjust for these contributions.

As you can see I was doing pretty well until November 2007. Up until that point I was up 16.03% since February, then the market took a major downturn. In January alone I lost 11.00% of the pre-contribution value of my account.
This had made for some rather disappointing numbers. Since February 2008 the holding in my portfolio have deceased 3.16%.
Performance Against S&P 500
Since February 2007 the S&P 500 has lost 0.81% of its value. As you can see from the chart below, my 401k was outperforming the S&P by quite a bit when the market was up, however now that the market is down I am underperforming. But those are the chances you take having a more aggressive portfolio, and I am still conformable with that.

In the future I will be investigating each fund in my portfolios performance.
